TECH 621 Spring 2011: Your Research Area

Sometime before next class on March 1, please write a blog post explaining the area you intend to work in for your TECH 621 final project.

As a reminder, I expect your final project will be an original research project (and paper), which can be conducted alone or in small teams of up to 3 people.

For now, don’t worry about teams. Just write down a clear explanation of the research area that interests you. You may not have a specific topic yet, but you should identify some area of potential research that interests you more than others. Give me as much information as you know about what your interest area is, and even ideas for specific topics, if you have them.

It is OK if you haven’t figured out a specific topic yet. Once you have identified your research area, the next step is to start reading previous research in, or closely related to, that area. You will have 2 weeks to work on collecting about 15 research articles and producing a brief literature review.

So, remember to write a blog post explaining what your interest area is, and to continue collecting references that you find interesting. I will provide more information about writing a literature review later.

Should you have any questions, as always, don’t hesitate to ask – in the comments below, on Twitter, or by e-mail.

Just curious, but I was wondering if it was possible if we could view examples of good past projects? Thought that would be nice since it would give a better understanding of the assignment.

This is the first time we’re using Radian 6. Past projects were quite different. Many empirical research journal articles you’re reading are good examples to follow – there’s one for this Tuesday, especially, that’s appropriate. That’s what we’re aiming for, a scholarly research paper.
